Ok so you’ve decided to take your life and health into your own hands. Maybe you’ve done some planning. You’ve brainstormed. And now you’re doing research because you have so many burning questions….
But wait- there’s articles supporting ideas AND articles which say the COMPLETE opposite… wait what?!!?! I thought science would make this easier for me!!!! Well, unfortunately it seems like the science is always changing. Or you’ll be able to find a study that disproves what has been proven in another study. It all gets very complicated!
So how do I sort through all this? First realize that science is ever-evolving. Things are changing. Five years ago eggs were bad for you. Ten years ago they were good for you… who knows right now?!?! So do you eat eggs? Well yes! If you were to read through the science nothing says DON’T EAT EGGS. It’s about their potential health benefits. And how many to eat, etc.
Second- read articles from trusted sources. Look at who is publishing the article and research, and maybe research them. That way in the future you can know if that site/writer/publication is a good one to turn to for another question.
Thirdly- remember that studies are paid for with ulterior motives…. not to get all sinister here but companies need to sell products. They can fund studies.
Fourthly- use common sense! Just like the egg example, no where does it say to never eat them. So use your judgement. Do you like eggs? Do they potentiialy have health benefits? Are they full of nutrition? Ask questions like that of yourself, and if it seems reasonable, eat some eggs. Don’t eat too many perhaps, but also don’t be afraid. Leading to my next point…
Experiment. Try things out. This is a great way to learn. Be safe, don’t go crazy- but try different things. Maybe eggs upset your stomach- great reason not to eat them. Maybe you’re on a budget and struggle getting enough protein. Then perhaps they are a great food for you. Be open to trying things and learn what works for you. What works for your body, and what works physiologically (i.e. you love Sunday brunch and an egg benedict. It’s a guilty pleasure. Do you really want to take away that treat from your life?!?!)
Weigh the pros and cons and make informed decisions. Don’t just listen to the ‘bro’ at the gym who keeps giving you advice. Do some research. Take charge of your life, health, diet and fill that brain with knowledge- how could that be bad??
